I got to agree with Nephirij, for three reasons...

1 Elitism is for cars, girlfriends and kitchen knives. Yes, betamax was better in some aspects...but standards are created for a reason.

2 Apple is the opposite of "open source"..heck..even the French know that.

3 If it wasn't for the ipod, half of these computer posers would be neon moding their PCs and apple would be a M$ company by now.
Next time you talk to a "mac head" ask them which they had first; an ipod or a mac.

I'll go ahead and just quote someone who never bought an iPod and is one of the world's most hardcore of PC gamers, the supposed antithesis to all that is Mac. Here's what Tycho had to say after he finally tried using a Mac as his main computer for a week.

"...save for platform-dependent gaming I've used my own Mac for every computing task this week. What I have ascertained is not that PCs as we know them lack good design, but that PCs as we know them have hardly any design to speak of. I'm not trying to be insulting. Use a Mac for a week, and we'll talk again.

I have edited autoexec.bat files in order to optimize the amount of available conventional memory, and I liked doing it, liked being the sort of person who could. As a PC user, enduring the grotesqueries of that experience is something that we are actually proud of. It's come a long way since then, jokes about "blue screens" and what not ring like tired vaudeville acts. But those struggles were certainly real, the battle wounds considerable, and now the skin has grown over it and to a certain extent we think this is just how it is.

I didn't even understand that's what was going on until I started to write this. Like men who love the wilderness for its savage and untamed qualities, I believe many of us are drawn to this stark brutality. That frontier living, the self reliance, the adversity. The Mac, like The Alliance in World of Warcraft, was easy mode.

I don't think that the Macintosh was inspired by ancient holy scrolls, found in a sea cave and excised from the original bible by a convocation of priests and wise men. But I do like it very much. It is extremely good at what it does, which is to say, exposing functionality."

Yeah, he sums up my own experience for better than I ever could.

I agree with you, that your mysterious "someone" summed up his and probably your experience with computers.

I found it interesting that twice in your reply that "video games" were mentioned.
Don't get me wrong, I am not throwing down the "i am 733ter than U" glove. I am agreeing that what mac does... it does. Yet, so does the X-box and even more so, a game-boy. When is the last time you had to reboot a game-boy?

A game-boy does what it does because it is was created under a closed development circuit. The variables are limited to increase stability at the expense of creativity and growth. Any closed system; Apple, game-boy, China under Mao Zedong (1949-1976), while it may make the system more efficient, it costs the system something. That cost, in this case is; independent hardware and software developments. Apple, while is in "easy mode", does nothing for those not willing to travel down the narrow path created by the extremely small number of developers hired by or licensed by Apple.

It warms my heart that your "someone" and yourself have found a OS that does what you want it to do. Just never forget that most, if not all of your enjoyment in your OS, is based on and has come from a pragmatic methodology (creativity) that is unable to function within its end product.

Closed systems breed loops.

I'm not sure I would lump the GameBoy in with any hindering of creativity and growth. That constitutes some pretty serious flame bait in most circles.

Wow so much is being written yet so little is being said. Techno babble confuses me. I still have to say though that pc's were cool when apples sucked. Now Apples rock my socks and Pc's are dragging.
