Dreamworks Bought the Rights to Ghost in the Shell

"DreamWorks has acquired rights to the Japanese manga "Ghost in the Shell" with plans to adapt the futuristic police thriller as a 3-D live-action feature."

Tell me that doesn't excite. Just try and say that without smiling. Yeah, I didn't think so. This is definitely exciting news for all of us Batou loving nerds who have been waiting for something awesome like this to happen. Oh, and did I mention that the movie is being produced and directed by Steven Spielberg?

Granted, I'm not the biggest Ghost in the Shell fan, but I definitely thought it was a cool concept and it's a perfect candidate for a live action adaption. This gets me excited for a couple of reasons. First of all, it means that more and more studios are realizing the potential of turning animes into live actions. And second, I really hope this begins a trend. There are at least two anime live action adaptions I know of thus far, including this one, and so far they both sound awesome. (Yes, I'm a DBZ fan. So sue me.)

Now they need to start doing a few other good anime live actions. Then I'll be happy. =D

obviously you're not the biggest ghost in the shell fan, because if you were you'd be worried about spielberg getting anywhere near it. especially after the catastrophes that were AI and war of the worlds

There way too much to pack in from the original movies and series to make it into a movie without dramatically altering the story. Then again, I have liked some of the live action movies derived from animes and mangas, so I cannot be sure.

Given the many recent changes to the DC comics universe (i.e., Superboy/man vs "Smallville") as well as to the recent "Star Trek" prequel, I see no problem with trying to make a movie out of "GitS". Since the plots and dialogue of GitS took second place to the great art work, I believe that as long as the live action version keeps it appropriately "dark" - - similar to the "Batman" movies - - then it should work, at least to a point. However, I can't help but wonder where they are going to find a buxom enough woman to attract the men, without raising eyebrows comparing it to a porno to the uninitiated (or even the initiated!) or the "GI Joe: Rise of Cobra" and "Lara Croft" movies, not to mention avoiding the obvious, inevitable, female "Rambo" comparisons. Just . . . please . . . don't include the Tachikomas . . . I found them REALLY annoying and totally unnecessary! And don't even mention the "Individual Eleven" or refugees; come up with something completely different (no Monty Python pun intended!). Characters first, then plot, followed by CGI and other special effects, and you'll make money, guaranteed; do it the other way around, and it'll fail, miserably, as did the "GitS" animated movies. And don't forget to include the "Origa" theme, whose proletariat song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it!
